Need help using FreeImage lib

Does anyone know how I can convert the color depth of an internally created Blitz image (not loaded from a file) and save it to disk in various formats then?

I'd also need to know how I could add transparency to this image when saving in PNG format (background color should become transparent then).

Okay, I managed it now -but there's a problem:

When I load a 24 bit bitmap, convert it to 1 bit (black & white), for example and try to save it again, the output file appears black and white -BUT the format is still 24 bit (16 million colors).

How can I save the converted image in the correct format?
